Why New Water Filters Need Flushing

HG PureWater PP sediment, granular activated carbon and carbon block cartridges being flushed before use

Installing a new water-filter cartridge does not always mean the system is immediately ready for normal use. Depending on the filter type, the manufacturer may require an initial flushing procedure.

Flushing can remove loose manufacturing residue, clear trapped air and prepare certain filter media for service. The correct procedure and flushing volume vary between products, so there is no single flushing time that should be applied to every filtration system.

Why Carbon Filters May Release Dark Particles

New activated-carbon cartridges can release a small amount of loose carbon dust, often called carbon fines, during initial use.

This may make the first water appear grey or contain small dark particles. Flushing the cartridge as instructed removes these loose particles before the water is used for drinking or cooking.

Carbon fines do not mean that every new cartridge is defective. However, dark water that continues beyond the specified flushing procedure should be investigated.

Do not estimate a flushing duration from another brand or cartridge. Carbon block and granular activated carbon cartridges may have different instructions.

Trapped Air Can Make Water Look Cloudy

Changing a cartridge introduces air into filter housings and pipework. When water flow resumes, fine air bubbles can make the water appear milky or cloudy.

Water caused by trapped air will normally clear from the bottom upward when left in a glass. Persistent colour, particles or odour may have another cause and should not automatically be attributed to air.

Opening the water too quickly can also create pressure surges. Follow the system instructions for returning the equipment to service.

Reverse-Osmosis Systems May Need a Different Procedure

Reverse-osmosis systems are not flushed in exactly the same way as whole-house cartridge systems.

Some RO components may contain manufacturing residue or storage preservative. Newly installed systems may require one or more initial tanks of water to be discarded, depending on the membrane, storage tank and manufacturer’s procedure.

Do not apply instructions written for a standard carbon cartridge to an RO membrane. Follow the manual for the exact system and replacement component.

Checks Before Starting the Flush

Before restoring normal flow:

  • Confirm every cartridge is in the correct stage
  • Check cartridge orientation where applicable
  • Inspect and correctly seat the O-rings
  • Confirm filter housings are properly secured
  • Check valves and connections
  • Make sure a safe flushing outlet is available

Whole-house systems may discharge a considerable volume of water during servicing. Ensure the flushing route will not cause property damage.

If the system serves the entire property, a licensed plumber may be required for installation or servicing work.

Monitor the System During Flushing

Restore water in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and inspect the housings and connections for leaks.

During the flush, observe:

  • Water clarity
  • Presence of carbon fines
  • Unusual odour
  • Flow and pressure
  • Leaks around housings or fittings

Continue only for the procedure specified for that cartridge. A longer flush is not automatically better and can waste water without resolving an installation or compatibility problem.

When to Stop and Ask for Assistance

Stop and inspect the system if there is a continuing leak, severe pressure loss, persistent discolouration or an unusual taste or odour after the specified procedure has been completed.

Possible causes include an incorrectly seated cartridge, damaged seal, wrong replacement component or a separate water-supply issue.

Record the installation date, cartridge codes and flushing procedure after the system returns to normal operation. These details will help with future servicing and troubleshooting.

For HG PureWater support, provide the system model, photographs and replacement-cartridge information.

Match the Instructions to the Cartridge

Before servicing, confirm the system model and the exact replacement cartridge. A sediment cartridge, granular activated-carbon cartridge, carbon block and RO membrane may each require a different start-up procedure. Use our replacement-cartridge guide to check compatibility, then follow the product manual. If the instructions are unavailable, contact HG PureWater before operating the system.
