Combine a Whole-House Filter, Water Softener and RO System

You can combine a whole-house filter, water softener and RO system as parts of one home water-treatment setup. However, installing all three is not automatically necessary for every property.

Each system performs a different job. The right combination depends on the home’s water source, confirmed water concerns, household demand and installation conditions.

Before choosing equipment, start by identifying the problem that needs to be addressed rather than assuming that more treatment stages will always produce a better result.

What Does a Whole-House Water Filter Do?

A whole-house water filter is normally installed near the property’s main water entry point. It treats incoming water before that water is distributed to connected taps, showers, bathrooms and the laundry.

The HGW-03 uses three filtration stages:

  • A PP sediment cartridge
  • An activated-carbon block cartridge
  • A granular activated-carbon cartridge

These stages are intended to help reduce suspended particles, rust, and chlorine taste and odour in treated mains water.

A standard whole-house filter is not the same as a water softener. It should not be expected to reduce hardness minerals simply because it treats water throughout the property.

What Does a Water Softener Do?

A water softener is designed primarily to reduce water hardness.

Hard water contains higher concentrations of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals can contribute to scale on shower screens, taps, plumbing fixtures and compatible water-using appliances.

The HGS-80 uses ion-exchange technology to reduce hardness. It performs a different role from the sediment and activated-carbon stages used in the HGW-03.

Before selecting a softener, confirm that hardness is the actual problem. White marks can suggest scale, but product selection should be based on local water information or appropriate testing rather than appearance alone.

What Does an Under-Sink RO System Do?

A residential reverse osmosis system is usually installed beneath the kitchen sink. It supplies a dedicated outlet for drinking, cooking, tea and coffee.

Unlike whole-house equipment, an under-sink RO system treats a relatively small volume of water at one point of use. It uses membrane separation together with pre-filtration and post-filtration stages.

HG PureWater’s HGH-24 and HGH-26 are designed for under-sink drinking-water applications. They do not replace treatment required for showers, bathrooms or laundry.

When Might You Combine All Three Systems?

A three-system configuration may be considered when a property has three separate objectives:

  1. Reduce sediment and chlorine taste or odour throughout the home.
  2. Reduce confirmed water hardness and scale.
  3. Provide RO-treated water at the kitchen drinking-water outlet.

In this situation, each system has a defined purpose. The whole-house filter addresses general-use filtration, the softener addresses hardness, and the RO system provides additional treatment for drinking and cooking water.

The correct treatment order and installation design must be confirmed for the property. It should not be copied from another home without considering water pressure, peak flow, plumbing layout and manufacturer requirements.

Do You Need All Three?

Many homes do not.

If the main concern is drinking and cooking water, an under-sink RO system may be sufficient.

If the priority is sediment or chlorine taste and odour across multiple outlets, a whole-house filter may be the appropriate starting point.

If confirmed hardness and scale are the primary problems, a water softener may be more relevant.

Two systems may also be sufficient. Common examples include:

  • Whole-house filtration plus RO
  • Water softening plus RO
  • Whole-house filtration plus water softening

Adding equipment that does not address a confirmed need can increase installation, maintenance and operating costs without delivering a relevant benefit.

What Should Be Checked Before Installation?

Before requesting a recommendation, provide:

  • Your postcode and water source
  • The main water concerns
  • Household size and number of bathrooms
  • Existing pressure or flow problems
  • Photos of the water meter and main entry pipe
  • Photos of the proposed outdoor installation area
  • Photos and measurements of the under-sink cabinet
  • Any recent water-quality report

HG residential recommendations normally require clear site photos and details of special installation requirements. Private, bore, tank or unusual water supplies may require further water-quality information before treatment is selected.
