A whole-house water filter does not usually replace an under-sink reverse osmosis system because the two systems treat water at different locations and for different purposes. Whole-house filtration treats incoming water before it reaches connected outlets around the property. Under-sink reverse osmosis, or RO, treats a smaller volume at a dedicated tap, primarily for drinking and cooking.

What Does a Whole-House Water Filter Do?

The HGW-03 is a three-stage system for treated municipal water. What Does Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Do?
An under-sink RO system is normally connected to one kitchen fixture. However, a filter should be selected for the actual water source and concern. Rainwater, bore water, unusual staining, recurring odour or suspected microbiological contamination needs a more detailed assessment and may require testing or additional treatment.
Whole-house filtration also differs from water softening. A standard sediment-and-carbon filter does not remove hardness minerals in the same way as an ion-exchange softener. If scale on taps, shower screens or appliances is the main concern, hardness should be assessed separately before selecting equipment.
When Should You Consider RO as Well?
Consider an under-sink RO system when the priority is more targeted treatment for drinking and cooking water. It can complement whole-house filtration rather than duplicate it: the point-of-entry system treats general household water, while RO provides an additional treatment stage at the kitchen.
NSF distinguishes point-of-use systems, including under-sink RO, from whole-house or point-of-entry systems. It also advises buyers to verify certification and contaminant-reduction claims for the specific product rather than assuming that every filter using similar technology performs identically.
