If you are seeing sediment, noticing chlorine taste or odour, or dealing with white scale around taps and shower screens, you may start looking at whole-house water treatment.
Two common options are a whole house water filter and a water softener. Although both can be installed on the main water supply, they perform very different jobs.
Understanding that difference is important before choosing a system.
What Does a Whole House Water Filter Do?
A whole house water filtration system treats incoming water before it is distributed to taps, showers, bathrooms and the laundry.
The exact contaminants reduced depend on the filter media used.
For example, the HGW-03 Whole-House Water Filtration System uses three filtration stages: sediment filtration, carbon block filtration and granular activated carbon filtration. However, conventional sediment and carbon filtration should not automatically be expected to soften hard water.
What Does a Water Softener Do?
A water softener targets a different problem: water hardness.

A conventional ion-exchange water softener passes water through a resin bed. Calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions, reducing the minerals responsible for hardness. A water softener may therefore be worth considering when the main problem is:
- Limescale around taps and fixtures
- Mineral deposits on shower screens
- Scale inside compatible appliances
- Soap that does not lather easily
- A confirmed high water-hardness level
The HGS-80, for example, is an ion-exchange whole-house softening system designed specifically to reduce calcium and magnesium hardness.
Water Filter vs Water Softener: The Key Difference
The easiest way to remember the difference is:
A whole house filter primarily filters the water. A water softener primarily changes its hardness.
Installing a carbon-based whole-house filter does not necessarily solve a hardness problem. Likewise, installing a softener does not mean you have installed comprehensive filtration for sediment, chlorine or drinking-water contaminants.
That distinction is why choosing a system based only on the word “filter” can lead to the wrong solution.
Do You Need Both?
In some homes, potentially yes.
A household could have both general filtration concerns and hard water. In that situation, a whole-house filtration system and water softener can perform complementary roles.
For example, incoming water may first be treated for sediment and chlorine before undergoing hardness treatment.
But a combination system is not automatically necessary for every Australian home. Water conditions vary substantially by location and source. Victorian health guidance also recommends choosing filtration equipment that is fit for its intended purpose rather than assuming every filtration device addresses the same water-quality issue. Before investing in a softener, it is therefore useful to establish whether hardness is actually the problem.
What About Drinking Water?
Neither whole-house filtration nor water softening should automatically be considered equivalent to an under-sink reverse osmosis system.
RO systems are generally designed specifically for drinking and cooking water and use a membrane separation process to reduce a broader range of dissolved substances.
For households wanting both general whole-house treatment and more intensive filtration at the kitchen, a common approach is therefore to use whole-house treatment at the property’s entry point and a dedicated RO system under the kitchen sink.
Which System Should You Choose?
Start with the problem rather than the product.
If sediment, chlorine taste or odour are the main concerns, investigate whole-house filtration.
If scale and confirmed water hardness are the main concerns, investigate a water softener.
If both are present, a combined filtration and softening setup may make more sense.
